Muriwai is a massive west coast beach stretching north from the township of Muriwai. Its length is the highlight of this beach - you can blast for hours in one direction, all the way to the Kaipara Heads. This is an awesome mission when the conditions are right.
The sand, however, has a tendency to get soft in places, especially as you go further north.
This beach is classed as a highway, and it gets well used as such. There is plenty of room for everyone, but do keep an eye out. The legal speed limit of 70kph really throws down the gauntlet... (imagine the speed camera photo!)
How to get there
Take the north-western motorway to the end. Turn left and head out towards Kumeu. Pass through Kumeu and Huapai, then start looking for the
turnoff to Muriwai on your left. It is well signposted. Muriwai Road takes you all the way out to the beach. Take a right and head towards the public reserve by the camping ground. This is best access point to the beach. The trip takes around 45 mins from the city.
